I have asked Lycius to begin the planning documents for a section of WarCry specific to NWN 1. Obviously there's still going to be a HUGE need for file hosting, boards, etc. for those PWs that choose to remain with NWN 1. We'd like to focus a goodly portion of our attention to those people.

With that in mind, please post your suggestions regarding the things YOU'D like to see in our NWN 1 section. :)

Isnt NWN1 already pretty well supported?

Seems to me that doing a lot of work on that might be a waste of time that can be avoid by waiting about 60 days to evaluate how many players are still around for NWN1.   I know a lot of PWs dont want to have to start over, and NWN2 definately has some major obstacles to overcome in the PW arena.   But its really irrelevant if you do not have the players to support keeping a ton of NWN1 worlds open.

60 days wont matter much because I'd wager 40% or more of current NWN players don't have the hardware necessary to launch NWN2. I'm basing that off of experience with callers at Atari.

NWN is a huge draw for middle aged nerds who play or played DnD as kids and in college. Most middle aged people with families can't just go out and drop 2k on a new system to play a game, when the old one works fine.

Besides, it'll be a year before the game supports PWs as most of us know them. If ever.

I would tend to disagree with that, being myself a middle aged nerd who played D&D as a kid.   Most of us are in our prime earning years and if you also happen to be a computer geek, then buying a new computer every 2-3 years is business as usual.   I have 7 computers within arms reach as I type this message including this laptop that I purchase exclusively to use for the NWN2 toolset.

I do agree that you may never see PWs as you currently know them; the new generation of PWs will be differant than the NWN1 worlds.   Whether that is good or bad, I do not know yet nor do I know if PWs are even viable.  But I was in the exact same boat with the release of NWN1.

My plan is to have the design doc in place in the event that we decide to open up an NWN 1 section specific to PWs. At this point, nothing will be 'live' until such time as the need is determined.

Our main focus is still NWN 2 and it will remain that way. The NWN 1 section would be for those who for whatever reason can't or don't want to play NWN 2.

Just because of the 7 computer statement, you are not a "Average middle aged nerd."

I'm talking about consumers with families, not IT people. Probably half the people I handled at Atari, and that's thousands and thousands of calls over 4 years, barely met NWN reqs and were on Gateways or Dells.

I know for a fact that about 40% of my playerbase would have to do major upgrades.

I wish I was an IT person :P   Then maybe I could figure out how to forward ports on a router, set-up a mysql database, or a number of other things that are about to fall in my lap.

How different are the system requirements of NWN2 from Oblivion, Battlefield 2142, or any of the other games that have been released in the past quarter?   Any computer Gamer is used to upgrading and is going to have to upgrade something nearly every year, it has been that way since I bought my first computer in 1978.

I tend to agree that people in their middle years with families...like me...are at their highest earning levels and are MORE willing to upgrade for games they really want to play. That said, I also understand that people with kids might not upgrade since money is always better spent elsewhere. I know that in my case, I started saving money about a year ago in anticipation of NWN 2's release. I knew even then that my machine wasn't going to be able to handle it and that I'd need to upgrade. This past spring I started piece-mealing my machine---first upgraded the motherboard & processor, then the video card, etc. But I have a lot of discipline and ability to save that way. Note veryone does. :)

At any rate, it will remain to be seen how many people will stay with NWN 1. Those who -do- will be old time NWN 1 players. We're certainly NOT going to see an influx of NEW players. The new players will be on NWN 2 and THEY are the ones that I have set my cap for with this site. But I still want to be supportive of the old guard too. ;)

I'll help out if I can with the NWN1 stuff.  I'm gonna return to making Grim's Tavern II a temporary NWN1 server.  Hopefully, some support will come of this from the remaining NWN1 community. =)

But you will have to do something unique that NWVault doesn't already do.  Otherwise people just wont use the resource.

Tsk, its not that hard, just raid a college fund or two and you are in business.   Just kidding!!  My kid has no choice but to go to college; room and board at Segal' Bed and Breakfast ends at age 18.

Thats really what I was trying to express, that as a fansite, I think it will be much easier to gain inroads on new product compared to trying to gain a fanbase on a game that has been around for 5 years.  Though I do think that Neverwinter Vault is making a huge mistake by trying to combine NWN1 and NWN2 into one site.  The game is not even released yet and their front page is a mess; you cannot tell what is NWN1 information and what is NWN2 information.

Now if Neverwinter Vault were to totally pull away from covering NWN1 in the future, I definately think that would be a void worth filling.

As I said, this is just a planning strategy in the event a need manifests itself. :) It's not a done deal and I'm full steam ahead for NWN 2 regardless. But we have a lot of space and if there's a need at some point in the future, it's there and planned. *pokes Lycius*

Off the top of my head, the key thing is not to make the NWN1 site cluttered, as well as not making it look clinical like the NWVault database items.  When I look for something on the Vault it just seems like they plopped down a form and added some database tags to a table formatted page.

I'm not the greatest web designer in the world, but I know athstetics (even if I dont know how to spell it). NWVault just has the appearance that is quite drab and daunting at time (if you dont know what you are looking for).  There are too many areas to sort through, and many times they aren't even used right by the people using them (mainly because of lack of description of what the area is for).

You'd need some sort of 'live' NWN1 server data base that people can see (at least a preview) of active worlds within the Warcry community.  Needs to be more availible and active than NWN Connections.
