When travelling from a town/city to another, if the world is such that a player would need to cross water, when boarding the ship a version of the world map comes up and the player is taken to an interior "encounter" where they are actually onboard a ship. It would be built as an interior area and ships going to different places could be made to look different and have different NPC interactions as well as possible monster/brigand encounters.
Similarly, travelling over mountains could mean that the world map takes a player to an interior "encounter" area simulating tunnels running through a mountain range.
By implementing flying on dragons and/or using dirigibles, something like the two above could be brought into play.
By doing any or all of the above, players wouldn't just get that standard, use the map and click on the place you want to go and have a remote chance of an encounter before arriving thing going on. Would something like this work? |

I think it would and have been counting on it working along those lines. A dialogue could start up when initiating an action from your examples that would take the player to a centralized world map.
I also like the idea of a quest anchored to a discovered treasure map that when used will open a special world map to take the treasure hunters to the start of the quest then remove the map so it's only done once if desired.
Ossan has released their world map system from Darkness Over Daggerford and I am thinking of checking it out under NWN and seeing what it's capable of. |
