Fu'Miga let us know that the staff at SAGA has posted an interview with Michael Marzilli aka Rowell, a scripter extraordinaire:
[SAGA] You were a very active and productive NWN1 scripter both for your own project and to others. Now that NWN 2 has arrived and teams are assembled to start making NWN2 PW's, can you share your opinion on NWN2 in general?
[Michael Marzilli] Truthfully, I'm holding out final judgement on NWN2. When NWN2 was first released, I'll admit, I was very disappointed. The game was full of bugs, commands that did not work, were not implemented or did things they should not be doing. The release came off to me as a rush job to meet the holiday season. Yes, Obsidian is putting out patches in a quick manner, but this shouldnt be the way things are done. Also, the sheer size of the module and required PWC files is a little bit outlandish, and will really impact negatively Persistent Worlds. I think that we'll see fewer large scale Persistent Worlds due to the computing power needed to host large modules that can accommodate many players.
On a positive note, the game is graphically beautiful. And the builder's toolset is much more robust, allowing the users to create some beautiful modules. With a skilled and dedicated building team, I think there will be a good number of smaller persistent worlds out there.
[SAGA] SAGA has the privilege of having your valuable help as you develop your scripts and hopefully we will aid you in stress testing each and every of your great systems. Now that we have NWN2 screaming for great scripted systems can you tell us a bit of what you are cooking up to be applied to NWN2?
[Michael Marzilli] Well, basically I want to convert several of the basic and key systems that ran my Engliton Server to NWN2, test it out, then release it to the community. So far, I've already got several things that were on my "To Do List" checked off. I've got the conversion of the Fair Loot Chest and Bashable Door completed, a Player/Character/Creature/Item/Area tracking system set up and working. This week I'll be finishing up a dynamic Faction System, and a Banking system. I have several more systems on that list, and I'll be getting to them as free time warrants.
At some point, since most of these scripts use Papillon's NWNX4 interface to a SQL database, I'd like to write a web site for people to use so that players can view in game information on the web. Let players view their characters online, delete old characters.....maybe have their characters purchase items up for auction...all over the web.
And....I'd like to take a moment to thank Papillon and the NWNX4 project for making SQL Databases usable in NWN2. Without that, most of my systems wouldnt be possible.
